World War I, also called the First World War or Great War, was an international conflict that in 1914–18 embroiled most of the
nations of Europe along with Russia, the United States, the Middle East, and other regions. The war pitted Germany, Austria-
Hungary, and Turkey against the Allies—mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States. It
ended with the defeat of Germany. The war was unprecedented in the slaughter, carnage, and destruction it caused.
There are very many postcards of the war from both sides, mainly of the destruction caused, and a lot produced for propaganda
purposes. Our
France and Belgium pages contain quite a few of the destruction in these countries - more will shortly appear here.
The map below shows the location of some of the major battles.
In conjunction with Zazzle, we have produced an extensive range of gifts, using images from these old
postcards. The items available include many reproduction postcards, coffee mugs, greetings cards, key
chains, fridge magnets, watches etc. Many images on these pages have a direct link to a reproduction
postcard - just click on the image to see and buy it ! (They are only about £1 each !) Or, to view more gifts
