which were absorbed were from London
Victoria and Waterloo to the

Clayton Tunnel
Did You Know........that the Waterloo and City Line
(the Drain) was built by the L and SWR in 1898 so
that its passengers could access the City of London
more easily ? The
Bank Station had a pair of
"travolators" installed in 1959 - I travelled daily on
the Drain, and well remember the disruption and the
dust, and the suppressed smiles of the passengers
as they rode the moving walkways for the first time.
A London, Brighton and South Coast train emerging from Clayton Tunnel, about 5
miles north of
Brighton.
And Did You Know........that in 1861 two trains
collided in the
Clayton Tunnel, killing 23 and injuring
176 passengers ?
Charles Dickens was involved in a train crash, at
Staplehurst in 1865, and it is thought that he based
his tale "The Signalman" on both incidents.
Atlantic Coast ERxpress, SR
The Atlantic Coast Express which ran from Waterloo to Devon and Cornwall from
1926 until 1964.

1st July 1906 a London and South Western Railway
train collided with a milk train at the eastern end of
