Southern Railway (SR)
The Southern Railway was formed as part of the 1923 grouping. Rail links which were absorbed were from London Victoria and Waterloo to the Channel Ports, Kent and south and south-west England. For a history of the company, please follow this link.

Did You Know........that the Waterloo and City Line (the Drain) was built by the L and SWR in 1898 so that its passengers could access the City of London more easily ? The Bank Station had a pair of "travolators" installed in 1959 - I travelled daily on the Drain, and well remember the disruption and the dust, and the suppressed smiles of the passengers as they rode the moving walkways for the first time.
A London, Brighton and South Coast train emerging from Clayton Tunnel, about 5 miles north of Brighton.
And Did You Know........that in 1861 two trains collided in the Clayton Tunnel, killing 23 and injuring 176 passengers ? Charles Dickens was involved in a train crash, at Staplehurst in 1865, and it is thought that he based his tale "The Signalman" on both incidents.
